About The Northern Session

For more than five years, The Northern Session has offered a warm, welcoming community for musicians, singers, and listeners across Aberdeen. Discover how our friendly circle began, what brings us together, and why there is always a seat saved for you!

Born from a love of shared music

The Northern Session began at the Northern Bar in Aberdeen just after the pandemic. As traditional sessions struggled to return and people found it difficult to get out and connect like in the good old days, we gathered to revive the joy of singing together and brighten up the dreich Aberdeen weather. What started as a simple desire for company, has flourished into a vibrant, supportive tradition that has kept going strong for over five years and bringing people together.

An eclectic and open musical circle

Our vibe is intentionally warm, open, and friendly. We embrace a remarkably broad repertoire, wandering happily from medieval Basque melodies to lyrical Scottish and Irish ballads, lively country, Americana, gospel, and rousing sea shanties. Whether you bring an instrument, an old song, or simply your curiosity, there are no strict boundaries—just genuine enthusiasm for tunes shared in good company.

No pressure, just community

If you are thinking about dropping in for the first time, there is no need to be nervous. Nobody expects master-level playing; everyone supports one another and chips in to help. Feel free to just sit back and listen for a while, soak in the atmosphere, and join in whenever you feel comfortable. You can come along entirely on your own and know that you will never feel lonely here!

The Northern Session is all about true community and genuine friendship. You can walk through the pub door on your own, pull up a chair, and immediately feel like you are surrounded by old friends :)
